Birth of a Tradition. Golden Age of Estonian Art from Enn Kunila’s Collection

The exhibition “Birth of a Tradition. Golden Age of Estonian Art from Enn Kunila’s Collection” brings for the first time to the audience of Tartu and Southern Estonia one of the most notable private collections in Northern Europe.

The exhibition features Estonian classical art from the 20th century, creating a possible view on early 20th century painting, focusing on the role of Tartu as the center of development. In the core of the exhibition are paintings from 1910 to 1945, which are brought together by specific use of color. The exhibition features 60 artworks from well-known Estonian artists. Great attention is dedicated to Konrad Mägi, in addition there are Ants Laikmaa, Nikolai Triik, Ado Vabbe, Eerik Haamer, Endel Kõks, Amandus Adamson, Anton Starkopf and many others. The exhibition is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Estonia’s independence.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue, audio guides and an educational program for different target groups. For children, there is an art room on the 3rd storey of the museum, where the artist Jaan Rõõmus has drawn playful pictures of Konrad Mägi, Ants Laikmaa, Nikolai Triik and many other artists on the walls. Children can colour pictures, put together art puzzles or they can go adventuring about the exhibition using activity maps.

The exhibition is open to visitors from May 19th to August 12th.
