Eike Eplik shows the beauty of things
Tartu Art House
19 September / On Friday, 22 September at 17.00 Eike Eplik’s personal exhibition “Beauty Salon” will be opened in the monumental gallery of the Tartu Art House.
Eplik has been placed in the new sculptors’ generation of Tartu by the art critics and she is characterised by fairytale-like spatial installations that clearly demonstrate the author’s sense of form and her masterful approach to materials. Natural found objects are mixed with perfectly realist sculptures, miniatures intermingle with life-sized. On the surface, her works talk about love and beauty – as the present title seems to suggest – but a sense of danger and mystery are always present whereby a precise description of her exhibitions is difficult. They are delightful stories that on deeper dissection reveal their true face and inner distortion.
Eplik adds: “Beauty has tremendous power that directs our desires and decisions, sometimes inconspicuously. We are enchanted by the beauty present in the physical world: it is beautiful because it wants to please us and, at the same time, we are constantly searching for it. Sometimes only a select few see it, sometimes it is apparent to everybody. It can also be theoretical but true beauty is always recognisable.”
Exhibition will remain open until 15 October.
Eike Eplik (b 1982) has studied sculpture in 2002–2007 at the Tartu Art College and in 2007–2010 at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Since 2010 she had various personal exhibitions in Tallinn and in Tartu. In 2012, she was awarded the young artist production award KUKU NUNNU by the contemporary art festival ART IST KUKU NU UT.
