9 May /

Since Christmas 2001 both locals and visitors have been enjoying the bell-ringing from the Town Hall, which to date has been performed on 18 bells manufactured in the Karlsruhe Bell Factory. To mark the 15th anniversary of the bell-ringing, 16 new bells will be cast by one of the world’s most reputable bell-makers – the Royal Eijsbouts Belfry in the Netherlands – to complement the existing bells. The chimes of the 34 bells will be suited to a more demanding concert repertoire and can be used to hold bell-ringing concerts. Chimes have become one of the favourite attractions of tourists around the world, and enhanced bell-ringing options are sure to bring more and more townspeople to Town Hall Square to enjoy these beautiful sounds.

The 16 new bells will be cast for Tartu over a period of around three months. The smallest of the bells will weigh 8 kg; the largest 96 kg. The total cost of casting, transport and installation is 55,000 euros. Tartu City Government is providing half of this amount, but to come up with the other half a fundraising campaign is being launched on 29 March. Everyone can contribute to making Tartu chime even more beautifully. The names of all benefactors will be put on public display. If everything goes as planned, the new bells will start ringing on 29 June – Tartu City Day.

You can contribute by:

  • making a donation in the information centre at the Town Hall (on the ground floor)
  • making a transfer to account no. EE882200221014740915 (beneficiary: Tartu Linnavalitsus (Tartu City Government), reference no. 02109206000004, explanation: bell-ringing)
  • via the crowd-funding platform Hooandja

Tartu is grateful to everyone who wishes to contribute to the beautiful bells of the city!
