Tõnis Paberit’s installation at the Tartu Art House

Tartu Art House

Tõnis Paberit’s installation “Vanemuine”

18 October / On Thursday, 19 October at 17.30 Tõnis Paberit’s installation “Vanemuine” will be opened in the small gallery of the Tartu Art House.

The composition is based on small wall sections that are constructed out of the stones of the “Vanemuine” theatre that was designed by Armas Lindgren and Arnold Matteus. Above these hang decorations painted by six artists from Tartu showing abstract and architectural motifs or recognisable portraits. All of these decorations, that reference the earlier stage design traditions, express their creators’ attitude towards the so called “Old Vanemuine” or the historic pre-war Tartu in general.

Tõnis Paberit explains his work: “The layer of Estonian language classical culture is very thin and I think that it should be preserved in every possible manner because some values are eternal. Me and many others haven’t been completely happy with all the decisions that were made during the post-war reconstruction of Tartu – the birth place of Estonian culture. Some significant places should have remained the same since they had symbolic value. By obliterating them, we become the discontinuation of our own culture.”

Participating artists: Peeter Krosmann, Rein Maantoa, Margus Meinart, Meiu Münt, Kadri Paberit and Imat Suumann.
Thanks: Kalev Essenson.

The exhibition will remain open until 12 November.

Tõnis Paberit (b 1952) studied psychology in the University of Tartu and participated in the activities of the legendary Art Studio. In 1978, he graduated from the Estonian State Art Institute. Most of his works are cast in bronze but lately he also uses other materials. He is the author of many monuments (latest for Karl Luik, the mayor Tartu, in collaboration with architect Uku Põllumaa). In 2015, Paberit had his last personal exhibition in the monumental gallery of the Tartu Art House with Andrus Peegel entitled “Maria & Varia”.
