Huupi’s installation “Endspiel” in Tartu Art House

Huupi, who has mainly painted dreamlike scenes containing absurd elements, is opening her first installative exhibition in the attic apartment that for years belonged to the legendary artist Andrus Kasemaa. When Huupi first saw these rooms, she felt that she has found the exact exhibition space that she had been looking for the new stage in her career. She has added objects and individual works in the surrounding atmosphere of seemingly decaying decadence and has thereby created a combination that leads to creative enlightenment.

Huupi adds: “To win something, you must sometimes lose. In chess, a large sacrifice can lead to a great victory. And resurrection can only happen after death.”

The artist also adds some lines from the film „Stalker”: „Let everything, that's been planned, come true. Let them believe. And let them laugh at their own passions. Because what they call passion is not some emotional energy but the friction between their souls and the outside world. And most important: let them believe in themselves. Let them be helpless like children since weakness is a great thing and strength is nothing.”

The exhibition is open from Wednesday to Saturday from 17.00 to 19.00 until the end of September. Entrance is through Tartu Art House’s second stairwell on Akadeemia street by buzzing the bell of apartment no. 6 and climbing to the last floor. No answer means that the exhibition is closed. Visitation is in ones and twos based on a live queue.

There is no separate opening but in the end of September an official closing will take place.

Evelin Salumaa (b 1982) has studied painting in Tartu Art College and University of Tartu. Her most important personal exhibitions have taken place in Tartu and in Tallinn. The last of these, “Plat Principal”, was in Tartu Art House in 2016 and earned her the Ado Vabbe prize.
