At the conference for the first time it was discussed in so many various ways whether youth work should move to the Internet, and if so then how. Challenges of development of information technology to youth work and youth workers were talked about, Internet behaviour of the youth was examined and new ways to change the world were introduced. There was also a chance to hear about the good examples of twin towns of Tartu (Turu, Tampere, Riga and Veszprem) regarding usage of the Internet in youth work, to surf the interesting web environments of jungle market, to say what one thinks about the future of youth work and to improve one’s skills of youth work in virtuality.
The conference was more like an experiment to the organisers. For the first time in the history of youth work conferences two performers had a chance to give their presentation as a Skype video conference. We are of the opinion that what we all heard at the conference changed the former concepts in our heads and inspired us to do new things. As a result of the ideas presented, possibilities introduced, examples shared and all the synergetic discussions, guidelines for carrying out online youth work were created. They were put together by Anne Õuemaa, head specialist of youth service.
150 youth workers, youth workers at school, youth work organisers, youth researchers, teachers, police officers and youth leaders from various cities of Europe participated at the conference.
The conference was organised by Youth Policy Service of the Department of Culture of Tartu City Government in cooperation with Lille Maja and Anne Youth Centre. The conference was supported by Tartu city, Youth In Action Programme and Estonian Council of Gambling Taxes. Dorpat Convention Centre and Hotel and Skype also gave us a hand.
