The festival Regiöö 2009 is surrounded by the mythical field of STAR BRIDE and its numerous semantic fields.
The Sun, the Moon and the Star should not be taken for mythical beings; these are pure poetic concepts with some moral implications. (K. Kroon)
It is thought that the symbolism of Sun, Moon and Star originates from the Iranian-Slavic Sun worshiping, which was brought here by the Russian Orthodox Church. It is highly probable that while creating a song about marriage proposal, our ancient singer turned this tradition into songs about Sun, Moon and Star. Also in Kalevipoeg these celestial bodies usually occur in the same order. (F. Oinas)
Near the ancient poet there lived men whose names were Kuu(valo) (Moon/Moonlight), Päev (Day/Daylight) and Täht (Star), and these men went to propose a girl called Salme; in some versions of the song she is also a daughter of a man called Ilm (Weather/World). “This fact from reality was mixed with the realities of the belief system – according to the principle of name-magic, these men had some (psychical) properties of these celestial bodies.” (E.Roosi)
Cosmic personifications in Star Bride were chosen “to express the traditional proposal rules dictated by the common wisdom: even if some suitor were bright as sunshine or soft as moonlight, a girl should still prefer the internal values of a trustworthy man (farmer, a boy from the neighbourhood), even if his “honours” are tiny as a star in the sky!” (A.Annist)

Our name comes from the series of gatherings where we come together in various environments and are quiet, only listening to the sounds around us.
Every sound is born from the silence. New soundscapes emerge as we let old runo songs echo in us. Making music is like telling a story, naming a world, creating a world.
In the process of creation we make sound with everything that could fit the story, the song. Sometimes we choose rhythm and ethnic instruments, sometimes a glass, a toy or another usual everyday thing.
One song fades into another, new resonances and melodies are born. Our style can be called ethnofuturistic. Main question is how to combine our two loves: experimental and ethnic music.
We have been playing together for a year now. In August 2008 we represented Estonia in 3rd international ethnofuturistic festival Kamwa in Komi-Permyakia. In 2009 April we got the main prize in Mooste folk music processing festival. In the meantime we create sound performances in various environments, i.e. we experimented and improvised in a giant weather observation ball in Hinsa village, southern Estonia.
Dialekt is a group consisting of young people, all 14 or 15 years old and from the municipality of Mäksa. The group was formed in September 2007. We come together once a week to practice in the local youth centre. The group consists of six musicians:
Maria Rebane – vocal,
Stella Rebane – recorder and vocal,
Eleri Lillemäe – keyboards and vocal,
Rauno Karro – guitar,
Sander Gorgišeli – bass,
Otto Kontro – drums.
Our good guide and tutor is Priit Moppel – he has been also behind the popularity of a folk group MuRRe.
Sireli is a group of friends who like to sing and play instruments together – and the skill of reading music is not important for us. The songs and tunes are taken mainly from the Estonian folk music tradition, but sometimes we weave in tunes from other people, too. We have already been on several festivals in Estonia and we are really happy to have this chance to perform in Tartu festival Regiöö.

“Improvisation in traditional music” workshop
The idea of the workshop was to make the young music students playing traditional music more creative and unrestricted. From February to May, eight sessions have taken place where different kinds of traditional music were played and individual approaches searched. Performing during the festival Regiöö would give the participants a good chance to show their results to wider audience.
The teachers of the workshop were Marju Varblane, Toivo Sõmer, and the guest teacher and supervisor Indrek Kalda.
