On Thursday, 24 August at 18.00 Leonhard Lapin’s personal exhibition “Estonian Forest” will be opened at the Tartu Art House as the beginning of the celebrations for his seventieth jubilee.
Installations have always played an important role in Leonhard Lapin’s oeuvre. In his works, Lapin has synthesised different materials and has offered various formal solutions and combinations whether in the form of large-scale obelisks in the urban space or as small-format architectones.
In 1994, Lapin started his “Estonian Forest” series that has focused on wood in its widest meanings. Since the first installations, Lapin has used the series to reflect upon the eternal dilemma that inevitable accompanies the “new nature” that is the result of the relationship between nature and people: what is the limit of this relationship?
In 1994, Lapin wrote: “The idea of the installation is to symbolically demonstrate the transformation of the natural forest structure into an artificial timber structure where the hierarchial order of the forest becomes an abstract combination, a world invented by humans. We embody the dualism: we are wanderers searching for novelties and the destroyers of an ancient order that has grown through time. What is our place in infinity?”
The exhibition is curated by Holger Rajavee.
The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Estonian Architects’ Union and Tiit Liivamägi.
The exhibition will remain open until September 17.
Leonhard Lapin (b 1947) studied architecture in 1966–1971 at the Estonian State Art Institute. In 1990–2013 he taught at the Estonian Art Academy and is now professor emeritus. He has also taught as a guest professor at the University of Tartu and at the Tartu Art College. He was one of the members of the artists’ group SOUP ‘69 and from 1973 has had over a hundred personal exhibitions in Estonia and abroad.
