16. oktoober 2017 / The campaign Register as a Resident of Tartu will begin on 16 October and continue until 12 November.

The campaign tugs at the conscience of those people who live in Tartu on an everyday basis and consume service here, but whose taxes are being received elsewhere.

At bus stops throughout Tartu one can see posters in shades of pink, which call on people to register themselves as a resident of Tartu. Campaign advertisements are also appearing on digital screens, social media and the intercom systems of shopping centres.

Musician Jarek Kasar, with roots in Tartu, has written a thought-provoking song for use by the campaign.

According to the Mayor of Tartu, Urmas Klaas, there are approximately 10,000 people living in Tartu who have yet to register as residents. ‘For example, if only 1000 people were to register, it would bring the city more than EUR 400,000 each year from the budget equalisation fund, which is approximately half of the sum that was spent on reconstructing the Kaarsild, or which could be used to build two or three new playgrounds or sports grounds’, noted Klaas.

The contribution by newly registered city residents allows Tartu to stand more for their interests.

The registration process is very simple and takes only a few minutes.
