City of Tartu eastern bypass completed

31. juuli 2018 / In the middle of July, the finishing touches were put on the third construction site of the eastern roundabout.

Tartu’s eastern bypass – the city’s largest road construction project of the past few decades – has been completed.

The third stage of construction on the eastern bypass, which connects the Lammi roundabout with Räpina Highway, has, for the most part, been open to traffic from the end of last year to this summer, since the majority of work could be performed without shutting down traffic.

This spring the section of road received its wearing course, markings were applied, glass noise barriers were installed on the viaduct, the islands in the middle of the road were organised and landscaped, shoulders were organised, and benches were installed.

The third construction site of Tartu’s eastern bypass is a section of road 1.56 km in length, extending from the Lammi Street traffic roundabout to Räpina Highway. In addition to that section of roadway, Mõisavahe and Nõlvaku streets and Soojuse Road were also partially reconstructed during the course of works. A grade separated junction was built on Soojuse Road, heading in the direction of Luunja Rural Municipality, and two cycle and pedestrian track viaducts have been built, which allow for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the roundabout.

The completed section of road connects two national roads – Tallinn-Tartu-Luhamaa Highway and the Tartu-Räpina-Koidula Highway – reduces transit traffic on the city’s other streets and allows for faster travel between the sections of the city.

The third construction section of Tartu’s eastern roundabout was built by AS TREF, the project was prepared by Toner-Projekt OÜ and owner supervision was provided by AS Taalri Varahaldus. The total cost of works turned out to be EUR 6.9 million. Construction on the third section of the eastern bypass began in January of 2017, and the section of road was opened to traffic last December. Construction works were completed by 18 July 2018, the deadline set forth in the contract.

The European Cohesion Fund provided 85% of the financing for the works.
