Twenty-nine works submitted to the City Centre multi-storey car park architectural competition

16 августа / A record 29 works were submitted to the architectural competition, announced in May, to find the best solution for the multi-storey car park to be built on the plot at Vabaduse Avenue 6. The jury will make its decision by 6 September.
According to City Architect Tõnis Arjus, a very diverse selection of solutions, in terms of the aesthetic and the technical side, have been submitted. ‘Selecting from among the submitted works, the jury and the included experts are faced with the great responsibility of not only finding a work that meets the prescribed conditions, but also a solution that takes into consideration the sensitive and dignified location of the registered immovable,’ added Arjus.
The purpose of the competition is to find architecture that is worthy of the Vabaduse Avenue 6 multi-storey car park and acceptable for use in the Old Town, at the same time allowing for the number of parking spaces on streets to be cut and better conditions to be offered for those moving about on foot and by bicycle. The ground floor of the multi-storey car park will be used as retail or service space, in order to connect the building to the surrounding city space.
The competition jury includes Tartu Deputy Mayor Reno Laidre (Jury Chairman), Tartu City Architect Tõnis Arjus, heritage conservation representative Egle Tamm, and architects Toomas Paaver and Tiit Trummal. The total award fund for the architectural competition is EUR 18,000.
