Construction of a barge workshop begins along the Emajõgi River
15 ноября / AS Ehitustrust began construction of a new barge workshop on the bank of the Emajõgi River.
The first works are the demolition of the old buildings and construction of exterior utility lines.
According to Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas, construction of the new barge workshop is the next step in rehabilitating and revitalising the banks of the Emajõgi River. ‘The construction of an attractive leisure centre on the shore will bring more people to spend time by the Emajõgi River. The building, which is intended for the construction of historic watercraft, will provide the city with a new exhibition centre as well as a unique educational-cultural centre, where the construction of old wooden craft will be taught,’ said Klaas. He added that funds have been set aside in next year’s city budget to revitalise the shoreline in the vicinity of the barge workshop.
A three building barge complex is planned for the Ujula Street 98 registered immovable. The building, which is intended for the construction of historic ships, will operate as a museum, exhibition site and building centre for old wooden ships. The building has a construction hall, smithy, carpenter's workshop, exhibition and seminar rooms and a cafe. In addition to the multifunctional main building, a lifeguard building will be built along with public toilets intended for beach visitors and a covered area for the winter storage of ships-boats and the warehousing of materials.
New access routes will be constructed and the area around the building will be revitalised.
The total cost of construction works is EUR 2,431,212. Construction of the barge workshop is being financed in the amount of EUR 624,975 from the Estonia-Russia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2014-2020 'Common Peipsi 2'. The completion date for the barge workshop complex is July 2020.
