City garden to be created behind the Lodjakoja barge workshop complex

14 июля / The City of Tartu is set to conclude a lease agreement with the non-profit organisation Majakas, which will build the Emajõgi Garden – an open city garden – behind the Lodjakoja barge workshop complex set to be completed this summer.
The public city garden will be designed as a common urban space, where local food will be grown and various study days and events will be held. All guests, volunteers, community gardeners and supporters will be welcome in the city garden.
‘City gardens bring together city residents, helping to cultivate a sense of community and thus enriching our common environment with new social and ecological values. We hope that city residents will find joy from gardening and that the home-grown delicious foods will reach quite a few dining tables’, said Deputy Mayor Gea Kangilaski.
Community and urban gardening offers new opportunities for city residents to engage in gardening in an urban environment. The goal of the undertaking is to invite city residents to engage in a common activity, to promote the principles of sustainable development and the functioning of new types of public areas. Various environmentally friendly solutions can be developed and tested in the garden. Among other things, visitors to the garden will find a dining area, edible hedges, a greenhouse, a pizza oven, a plant study trail, and much more. In addition, you can take part in working bees, trainings or organize your own environmentally friendly events in the garden. It is the wish of the initiators of the Emajõgi City Garden to create a pleasant natural place, where one can enjoy being outside, practice good cooperation between citizens and organizations, and show respect for nature.
The Emajõgi Garden will cover 2700 square metres behind the Lodjakoja barge workshop complex, which will be completed at the end of the summer. The plan is to open the area to visitors in the spring of 2021.
Already this August, major public information evenings, working bees and other events will be taking place, with more detailed information available on the Emajõgi Garden’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/emajoeaed/. On 8 August, the Emajõgi Garden team will be in Tartu Central Park, in celebration of Urban Nature Day, where they will introduce their vision for the garden and how everyone can participate in the Emajõgi Garden.
