The week of flavours ‘From Forest to Table’ will bring wild food experiences to Southern Estonia in November

29 октября / As part of Southern Estonia’s week of flavours ‘From Forest to Plate’, which is taking place for the first time from 5–15 November, restaurants in six counties in Southern Estonia invite those who are interested to come participate in flavour experiences.
Nearly 60 restaurants have put together special menus in which products from the Estonian forest have been used as at least one component and which consist largely of local raw ingredients. For example, you can find Iceland moss, chestnuts, acorns, game, spruce shoots, meadowsweet, and much more. The price of the special menu is between EUR 15 and EUR 19.
Memorable flavour experiences await guests in six counties: Tartu County, Jõgeva County, Põlva County, Viljandi County, Võru County, and Valga County. All caterers and menus can be viewed at www.visitsouthestonia.com/metsasttaldrikule.
‘There is nothing more important to a person than food from around his or her own home. As a producer, I try to offer food that I have grown myself; and as a consumer, I also appreciate clean, raw ingredients of Estonian origin. The week of flavours ‘From Forest to Plate’ is exciting because the menus also include raw ingredients that are usually not found in the selection and which are difficult to obtain, such as penny buns or false saffron milkcap’, said Jüri Makarov, owner of Kivitalu, which is participating in Southern Estonia’s week of flavours.
The aim of the ‘From Forest to Plate’ event is to increase the number of visitors to catering establishments, to support the region’s developing food culture and small food producers, and to highlight local raw ingredients.
‘Taking place for the first time, the week of flavours places an emphasis on the strengths of Estonian cuisine – forest products and products from small businesses, which Estonians often take for granted, but which make visitors to Estonia enthusiastic about local cuisine’, said Helen Kalberg, Marketing Manager for the City of Tartu. ‘Cooperation between six counties in creating this event offers the visitor at least 60 reasons to visit Southern Estonia, to move about and enjoy both regional flavours and autumn in Southern Estonia,’ she added.
Southern Estonia’s week of flavours is organized by: The City of Tartu, Tartu Business Advisory Services, South-Estonian Tourism Cluster, Tartu County Tourism Foundation, Jõgeva County Cooperation Chamber, Põlva County Development Centre, Valga County Development Agency Foundation, Võru County Development Centre, and South Estonian LEADER action groups. The following contributed to the creation of the idea concept: Tartu Science Park, TÜ Taluturg, NGO Sibulatee, and Mulgi Väiketootjate Liit MTÜ.
