Painting Department graduate Mirjam Hinn at the Tartu Art House

Hinn has previously graduated from the Tartu Art College and the present exhibition is her master’s project at the University of Tartu. “Solidified Sound” is based on the phenomenon of synaesthesia that she uses to visualise sounds. Aural elements are replaced with brush strokes and layers of sound are depicted through geometric shapes filled with colour gradients. 

Hinn’s works form a symbolic final graduate project: during the first years of the Painting Department the connection with Tartu’s historic roots and the output of the former art school Pallas were clear, but over the last years this foundation has been left behind in order to embrace the trends of the contemporary art world where the brush stroke is currently one of the central and defining elements.

The artist adds: “This exhibition consists of visual depictions of unnatural sounds. They have been created by people and have been lifted from their everyday context. Every sound has then gone through the artist’s personal interpretation process to become a painting. The sounds and the visuals complement each-other and become one. Although the nature of sound is to be in constant motion and transformation, they have now solidified into a material form.”

Defence of Mirjam Hinn’s master’s project will take place on 6 June.

The exhibition will remain open until 22 June and with its closing one the longest traditions of the Tartu Art House will end.
