Estonian Sculptors' Union shows animal sculptures at the Tartu Art House

Tartu Art House

 Jaaks Soans. Monument. 2017. Plastic

/ On Thursday, 29 June 2017 at 17.00 Estonian Sculptors' Union's animal sculptures exhibition “Today I Will Save As Many Flies As I Can” will be opened at Tartu Art House.

Some people are real animal loves and some sculptors fashion the likenesses of animals. It is worth mentioning that animalism is a separate genre of sculpture and artists who depict animals have special title: animalists. The present exhibition contains both sculptures in classical format as well as playful contemporary installations.

Sculptures of animals are mostly made by artists who love them or keep them as pets. Art made in co-operation with their animal friends offers viewers positive and harmonic energy. However, not everything is an idyll: ferocious and stressful contemporary world that baffles and unsettles us creeps even into such an optimistic exhibition.

Estonian Sculptors' Union's exhibition brings together works that are already famous and some that have never been seen before. They inquire: Why is animal sculpture special? How many of Estonian sculptors make animal sculptures? Are there secret animalists? Why do we keep turning back to animals for inspiration? What are the motifs and reasons and what is the present situation in animal sculpture?

The exhibition will remain open until 23 July.
