26 November / The first Sunday of Advent, 28 November, will see the official opening of Christmas City Tartu.

The Village of Light and the skating rink encircling the ‘Kissing Students’ fountain on Town Hall Square will welcome visitors from 10:00.

Returning to the Village of Light this year will be coffee and gingerbread vendors, fire cauldrons, carousels, sleigh rides and ponies, a crafts workshop and animated film pavilion and a straw house. Town Hall Square will host a total of 18 glass pavilions, which will be kitted out by the Tartu 2024 and Full of Junk Design teams, UT Tartu Observatory, the Limnology Centre of the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the Akva:rium Lake Museum, Tartu Health Care College, theatre designer Laura Pählapuu, students and instructors from the Tartu branch of the School of Architecture, the Kvark science theatre, designer and artist Martin Rästa, the NGO Kirbutsirkus and Gardest house & garden centre.

Over the next six weeks, the ice rink will host a series of skating discos, a fairytale ball for children and 12 skating lessons.

The lighting of the first Advent candle, which traditionally draws thousands of onlookers to Town Hall Square, will not be taking place as a public ceremony this year due to the spread of coronavirus. However, anyone wishing to do so can light their own candle from the Advent flame on the city’s Christmas tree and take it home with them.

The opening times of the Village of Light and skating rink and information on events, square maintenance and ice conditions can be found online at www.joululinntartu.ee and on the skating rink’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/raekojaplatsiuisuvaljak.

The Village of Light will be open until 9 January. The skating rink (including skate hire) and café will operate through to the end of February.
