Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test on Wednesday, 18 March

/ The Estonian Rescue Board will test the nationwide emergency alert system on Wednesday, 18 March, between 15:00 and 15:10. All alert channels will be tested, including the public siren network. In 2026, nationwide tests will take place three times: 18 March, 10 June and 14 October.
Over the past few years, Estonia has developed the national emergency alert system EE-ALARM, which enables authorities to quickly inform the public in case of danger. Regular tests help ensure the system works reliably and allow people to think about how they would act in a real emergency.
What to do if you receive an emergency alert
Emergency alerts may reach people through several channels: SMS messages, notifications in the Eesti app or the Ole Valmis! (“Be Prepared!”) app, text banners on ERR channels (ETV, ETV+, the news portal and app), and through the siren network in larger settlements.
In the coming years, the system will also include cell broadcast technology, which can deliver alerts to mobile phones using sound, vibration and light regardless of the phone’s notification settings.
Emergency messages are always short and clear, explaining what has happened and how to act. Additional information during crises is available at kriis.ee, olevalmis.ee, or via the national information hotline 1247. Only official sources should be trusted.
A siren always means: take shelter indoors immediately
If the sirens are activated, you must immediately take shelter indoors in the nearest building. The safest place is usually where you already are. If you are inside a building, stay there. Move to lower floors or a basement if possible, and keep away from windows.
According to a study by the Rescue Board, 68% of people stay at home and look for a safer place inside their home when they receive an alert instructing them to take shelter, which is the correct action. However, some people would leave their homes, which may put them in danger.
The nationwide alert system test is a good opportunity to review your personal emergency plan and be better prepared for potential crises. In addition to the March test, the system will also be tested on 10 June and 14 October this year.
