Residents of Tartu invited to test a hands-free ticketing system

Tartu City Government

Hands-free ticketing system Jiffi

/ Turnit OÜ, which tested the hands-free ticketing system Jiffi on a small group during the summer, has reached the next phase in the development of the novel system.

On 13 November the company will begin public beta testing, in which at least 1000 residents of Tartu are invited to participate. The testers will be able to ride busses for free during the testing period. Testing will last until the end of the year.

The Jiffi pilot project, which began in August with a limited group, has been a success. As of today, 73 testers have performed 2840 trips using Jiffi. The data received has helped in updating Jiffi’s software four times and all non-functioning equipment has been replaced. However, the limited number of testers also limits development. Therefore, they are moving on to the next phase, during which public beta version testing will begin.

According to Veronika Kallaste, Manager of Public Transportation Development for the Tartu City Government, the city is very thankful to the Jiffi team as well as all those who helped test the Jiffi application, and invites residents to take part in the new testing. ‘All those who ride inner city buses in Tartu and own a smartphone are invited to participate in the testing of the Jiffi application, so that Tartu could adopt a mobile automated identification ticketing system', said Kallas.

If you would like to become a tester of Jiffi’s beta version, you must register at the address jiffi.ee. Registration is open as of 6 November and you can register yourself as a tester throughout the testing period. Public testing begins on 13 November and will last until the end of the year. Testers will be able to ride for free on public transportation until the end of the testing period. At present, only Android users whose telephones have been updated to at least version 5.0 are invited to take part in testing.

Jiffi’s end goal is to implement a reliable and fully automated, hands-free ticketing system in inner city busses, with the help of which it will be determined precisely when a passenger with a smartphone enters and exits the bus. A public transportation user isn’t required to do anything, and their smartphone never has to leave their pocket. All you need to do is download the Jiffi application.
