Tartu to begin construction of memorial to Koidula and Jannsen

9 March / Tartu to erect a memorial square dedicated to L. Koidula and J.V. Jannsen, near the Kaarsild.

According to Tartu Mayor Urmas Klaas, preserving the memories of Jannsen and Koidula is a worthy gift in celebration of the centennial of the Republic of Estonia.

The monument to Koidula and Jannsen, and the surrounding square, will together comprise a landscape architecture and sculptural whole. The authors of the sculpture have placed Koidula and Jannsen among the people, depicting Koidula as a child and Jannsen as a young man.

The design competition for the memorial took place in the summer of 2016. It was won by the work Tärkamine, the authors of which are Edgar Kaare, Kerli Irbo and Terje Ong, from OÜ TajuRuum, sculptors Bruno Kadak and Mare Mikof, and architect Tõnu Laanemäe.

The construction of the square will last from April to July, with the plan being to install the sculptures in July and to open the memorial square in August 2018.
