Tartu’s Year as Estonia’s Youth Capital Brings Concerts, Festivals and Youth-Led Initiatives

/ Tartu holds the title of Estonia’s Youth Capital in 2026. The Youth Capital year will bring a diverse programme of events to the city and encourage young people to actively shape activities and initiatives themselves.
The aim of the Youth Capital year is to provide young people with more opportunities to launch initiatives, participate in organising events, and contribute to the development of Tartu’s urban environment and community.
“This title is a great recognition for all of us. It confirms that Tartu is a leader in Estonia when it comes to involving young people and creating a youth-friendly living environment. Young people need not only opportunities to have their voices heard, but also genuine opportunities to influence decisions and take part in creating new ideas and experiences. During the Youth Capital year, we will give more space to young people’s ideas, courage and experimentation, because a vibrant and forward-looking city is built together with its youth,” said Mari-Ann Saluste, Head of Youth Affairs for the City of Tartu.
Youth Capital 2026 Events
Several major youth-focused events will take place throughout the year.
On 1 June, Tartu Children’s Day will be held, featuring singer Inger as the headline performer. On 11 June, young people will have the opportunity to create a new public artwork as part of the Stencibility Street Art Festival. On 28–29 June, Tartu City Day will be celebrated, featuring performances by soloists from the Koolilaul competition. The gala concert will conclude with a special piece dedicated to Tartu’s Youth Capital year.
During the first weeks of August, the Old Town Festival “Tartu Sumin” will include a dedicated youth area with daily activities. International Youth Day will be celebrated on 12 August. From 27–29 August, the youth-organised festival “KUS?” will bring a diverse programme to the city centre.
On 1 September, Knowledge Day (“Tarkusepäev”) and Teadfest will take place in Central Park, featuring workshops, concerts and discussions.
