Lviv to become Tartu’s twin city

Tartu City Council

Tartu-Lviv

/ The largest city in western Ukraine, Lviv, will become a twin city of Tartu following a decision by the city council.

The council decided to establish twin city relations with the Ukrainian city of Lviv and tasked the city government with signing a cooperation agreement to confirm the partnership and collaboration.

Over the past couple of decades, Tartu has had numerous contacts with various Ukrainian cities and regions. The good cooperative relations between Tartu and Lviv date back to 2006, and both sides have repeatedly expressed their willingness to further develop bilateral relations. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the focus has shifted to contributing to Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts and cooperation in the areas of civil protection and crisis management.

Both Tartu and Lviv are cities rich in cultural life and heritage, and both are members of the UNESCO Cities of Literature network. In addition, both cities are university towns that offer medical training among other disciplines. Lviv is home to Ukraine's oldest university and also hosts the country's national medical university.

Currently, Tartu has 15 twin cities: Baerum, Deventer, Ferrara, Frederiksberg, Hafnarfjördur, Hämeenlinna, Kaunas, Lüneburg, Riga, Salisbury, Zutphen, Tampere, Turku, Uppsala, and Veszprém. The most recent twin city status was given to Riga in 2005. Tartu also has partner cities, including Aegina, Gaziantep, Kutaisi, Ningbo, and Siena.
