Tartu is calling for financial donations to provide vehicles to law enforcement units in its sister city of Lviv
Tartu City Government Press Release
/ The City of Tartu has launched a charity campaign to support its sister city of Lviv, which is facing growing security challenges in the face of Russia’s war of aggression. The aim of the campaign is to raise funds to purchase and send reliable second-hand vehicles to law enforcement units. All residents, businesses, and friends of Tartu are invited to donate.
‘Lviv lives under the shadow of rocket attacks and the threat of sabotage. The war is not somewhere far away; it’s affecting the city of Lviv and the lives of its people at every turn. We have the opportunity to support our sister city and provide its residents with a much-needed sense of security,’ said Urmas Klaas, Mayor of Tartu.
In a letter sent to Tartu, Mayor of Lviv Andriy Sadovyi explained that Lviv has become an important humanitarian and logistical centre during the war, with a population and business sector that have grown significantly in the past three years. The city hosts daily funerals for fallen heroes, as well as numerous public events in support of military and humanitarian initiatives. In wartime, security is critical, which is why Lviv needs to increase the number of security services and police patrols. This means a greater need for additional patrol cars and vans.
The City of Tartu is contributing to the campaign and is asking for additional financial support from its citizens to help cover the costs of purchasing and transporting the vehicles. Suitable vehicles will be purchased under the supervision of the city government and specialists from the non-profit initiative United Delivery Mission to ensure that they meet the needs of Lviv. The vehicles will be delivered this spring under the auspices of the City of Tartu.
Donations can be made to the Tartu City Government’s bank account EE882200221014740915 (Swedbank AS), using the reference number 02109206000004. Please include the keyword ‘donation’ in the comment. Each donation will help strengthen the sense of security among the people of Lviv and support the purchase of vehicles needed for peacekeeping.
Tartu’s friendship with Lviv became official in 2024, but support for Ukraine started earlier. This year, battery banks, hand and foot warmers, art supplies, and a piano for the Lviv Music School have been delivered from Tartu to Ukraine. In 2022, Tartu sent three commuter buses to Lviv, which are primarily used to transport Ukrainian children.
