Tartu to celebrate the 105th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia

23 February / On 24 February, the people are invited to attend the traditional ceremony honouring the Estonian flag at the Tartu Observatory and then Town Hall Square, where the anniversary event and people’s celebration of the Defence League’s Tartu District will take place.

24 February

At 8:15 wreaths will be laid at St. Paul’s Cemetery and Raadi Cemetery, before the monuments to those who died in the War of Independence.

At 9:15 the ceremonial lining up of the Defence League’s Tartu District and student organisations dedicated to the anniversary of the Republic will begin at the Tartu War of Independence Monument, in Tartu. Speaking will be Kaspar Kokk, Chairman of the Tartu City Council, Priit Tamm, Chaplain of the Defence League’s Tartu District, and a representative of student organisations.

10:00 a ceremony honouring the Estonian flag at the Tartu Observatory. Speakers will include Mayor of Tartu Urmas Klaas; Chairman of the Board of the Association of Municipalities of Tartu County, and Mayor of Tartu Rural Municipality, Jarno Laur; Dean of the Tartu Diocese of the EELC, and Pastor at St. Peter’s Congregation, Ants Tooming; and Kristjan Raja, Deputy Chairman of the Estonian Students’ Society.

At 11:00 in Town Hall Square, encouragement of the members of the Defence League’s Tartu District and the taking of the oath of a Defence League district member.

At 12:00 a folk festival will begin with the ensemble Lõõtsavägilased and you can view the Defence League’s equipment and weapons exhibition.

We recommend that you bring the Estonian flag with you when coming to the anniversary events of the Republic of Estonia.

Estonia’s birthday at ENM

On 24 February, the Estonian National Museum will have activities for the whole family, with exhibitions, the restaurant, and the museum shop open.

At 16.00, the festive day concert ‘One Song, One Way’ will begin in the bridge area of the ENM. The concert is free of charge for everyone and you can also view the broadcast on the ENM website and Postimees Online.
