Tartu expands the locations of buildings that will operate in a crisis
Tartu City Government Press Release
/ The City of Tartu granted a construction permit for the construction of an autonomous electricity system for the Ilmatsalu sports building, which will, by the end of the year, bring the total number of operational crisis information centres across the city to three.
While the A. Le Coq Sports Hall and the Variku Sports Hall already have an autonomous (continuous) electrical and communication system, the Ilmatsalu Sports Hall will receive one by the end of the year. Independently functioning buildings continue to function in the event of both power and communication outages, which means that in the absence of central electricity and communications, these buildings will be able to provide people with the basic services necessary for life.
‘The locations of these strategic centres in the city of Tartu have been selected so that they would be found on both sides of the Emajõgi River and also away from the city centre. It is up to the local government to provide essential services, such as a warm space, information, and advice to people in a crisis situation, which is why we are constantly raising our level of preparedness to cope with various crisis situations,’ said Mayor Urmas Klaas.
Depending on the nature and extent of the crisis, crisis information centres will be opened to city residents in a situation where a significant number of homes are without electricity, water, or district heating, for example. In all three sports buildings, it will be possible to offer advice and assistance to people, information about the situation in question will be given, and you will be able to charge your smaller smart devices, boil water, heat food, and also bathe there, if necessary.
