15 March / The best success stories of 2020 were unveiled today by Green Destination, the international sustainable tourism organization, at the international virtual tourism fair ITB Berlin. Tartu placed second after Chile in the Environment and Climate category.

As its success story Tartu presented its city-wide Smart Bike Share and city buses operating on Estonian natural gas – the purpose of which is to reduce automobile traffic in the City Centre, noise and air pollution – to the Green Destinations Stories Awards competition.

‘We have undertaken various activities aimed at preserving and improving the urban environment in order to provide the best possible living environment for the current and future residents of Tartu. It is a pleasure to acknowledge that the same values are also becoming increasingly important for tourists, and Tartu is recognized as a destination for sustainable tourism. This, in turn, opens up new opportunities for us to present the Tartu region and its diversity to both domestic and foreign tourists and thereby stimulate tourism’, said Deputy Mayor Raimond Tamm.

The most important criteria when selecting the best success stories were the level of innovativeness of the solution, how effectively these stories help to make tourism more sustainable, and to what extent the success story can be applied in another destination.

The participation of Estonian destinations in the Green Destinations programme was financed by the European Regional Development Fund and coordinated by Enterprise Estonia.
