Tartu Smart Bike Share bicycles equipped with winter tyres
22 November / From this week, regular Tartu Smart Bike Share bicycles will be equipped with winter tyres and will remain in operation during the winter months.
Electric bicycles will remain available until the temperature falls below freezing around the clock.
On Thursday, winter tyres were installed on 250 Tartu Smart Bike Share bicycles, making it safer to travel with them during winter conditions. According to Roman Meeksa, Head of the Tartu City Transport Unit, which is responsible for maintaining the bicycles, winter tyres are not a magical force that will keep bicycles upright under every condition. ‘In winter conditions, and especially when it is slippery, the cyclist needs to be careful and critically assess their own riding skills. We definitely recommend that a helmet be worn,’ emphasised Meeksa.
The 500 electric bicycles that are part of Tartu Smart Bike Share will be available to city residents until the daytime and evening temperatures persistently fall below freezing. Bicycles will be placed in storage for the winter, since charging when temperatures are below freezing may damage the batteries of electric bicycles.
The Smart Bike Share system was opened in Tartu on 8 June, with 1.88 million kilometres having been travelled since then.
