Tartu and Veszprém were initially linked from 1969-1975.
In 1971 the two cities signed an agreement to further enhance ties between them. Communication broke off in 1975, but the two cities rekindled their relationship in 1990 in Veszprém.
Veszprém will be the European Capital of Culture in 2023 and Tartu in 2024: the cooperation agreement between the cities was signed in 2019.
