Kompanii Street to become a pedestrian-friendly leisure area for the summer

/ Kompanii Street, located next to Town Hall Square in Tartu, will be transformed into a pedestrian-oriented cultural and leisure space for the summer. A street section previously used mainly for parking will become a lively urban area with outdoor cafés and seating.

“We want Kompanii Street to be a place where people choose to stop and spend time during the summer. A more pedestrian-friendly space helps bring the atmosphere of Town Hall Square to nearby streets and makes the entire Old Town area feel more cohesive,” said Mayor Urmas Klaas.

The street will feature outdoor café areas, seating, seasonal greenery, bicycle racks, an information board for cultural events, and a public book exchange shelf.

Kompanii Street is home to several cafés, as well as the city library, art museum, and Elektriteater cinema, but the current street layout has not supported spending time there. In cooperation with local institutions and businesses, the new setup will also create opportunities for smaller events, exhibitions, and other activities.

From 7 May to 30 September, Kompanii Street will be closed to parking between Küütri Street and Town Hall Square. Access for emergency and service vehicles will be maintained. Parking for people with disabilities will be available in the taxi area on Vabaduse Boulevard.
