/ The City Government has issued a building permit for the construction of a nature-based stormwater solution in the Sadamaraudtee corridor. The project aims to support the existing stormwater system during extreme rainfall and make the city more resilient to climate change.

“Cloudbursts are no longer rare, but are becoming increasingly common due to climate change. This is why it is important for cities to implement smart, nature-based solutions that allow water to move naturally and reduce the load on drainage systems,” said Deputy Mayor Kertu Vuks.

The project includes the creation of a nature-based stormwater retention area to mitigate and prevent flooding during heavy rainfall, especially in situations where pipelines can no longer handle the volume of water. Excess stormwater will be directed from the Tähe Street intersection to the City Blues project area in the Sadamaraudtee corridor.

To manage large volumes of water during heavy rain, widened ditches and a retention pond will be constructed and connected to the stormwater pipeline. This will function as a temporarily floodable area, from which water will be directed further along the pipeline towards Ropka Street.

The total budget for the City Blues project in Tartu is €0.49 million and is fully funded by the European Union. More information: https://tartu.ee/et/sinilinn-ehk-city-blues
